#ChitChat: Why I choose to read slowly!

Today I want to talk about a topic that I feel like is often discussed on book blogs and social media but targets only one side of the spectrum. A lot of reading related blog posts seem to focus specifically on teaching people how to read faster and faster. I can understand why it would be favorable to increase one’s reading speed, however, I have consciously chosen to read slowly and will tell you guys in this post why.

Ever since I can remember, I have always been a slow reader and was constantly beating myself up about it, wanting to learn how to read faster. For reasons I do not understand today, it was of utmost importance to me to finish books quickly and to read as many books as possible. Today, I have accepted that I simply enjoy and benefit more from reading more slowly and don’t really care about the quantity but rather the quality of my reading.

ce3ec3804f5c229ab385df4dcaabe87f-e1508240930773.jpgI’m a very visual person and like focusing on the words that are in front of me. I’ve also noticed that a lot of the time when I try and read as fast as I can I don’t enjoy a book as I much I was hoping I would. However, when I slow down I feel like I can simply take in more details of the story and am more likely to end up liking the book in the end. On top of that, reading, in my opinion, should be a relaxing activity, something that helps me unwind at the end of a stressful day. So for me to be able to do that I just worked out that I had to read slow and accept the fact that I am a slow reader and I have no problem with it! No matter what type of reader you are, I think what matters most is that you can fully enjoy books and the reading experience that comes with them 🙂

What about you? Do you read fast or slow and how do you feel about it? Would you like to change anything about your reading speed or are you happy with it?

Also please let me know if you guys like these kinds of ChitChat posts so I know to do some more in the future!

Book Review: Caraval

Caraval_comps_v9-1(pp_w1200_h1823)

Book: Caraval
Author: Stephanie Garber
Genre: Fantasy
Format: Audiobook
Rating: ★★★★★

What an extraordinary read! I know I know this book has been hyped a lot and I have to admit I absolutely loved it too. It was so just magical and in my opinion, pretty much everything about it was utterly magnificent. I can’t remember the last time a book made me feel so involved with the characters and their development throughout the story. Not knowing what will happen and what is true and what not just kept me in suspense and anticipation throughout this, in my opinion, outstanding book.

And yes, I did listen to this as an audiobook BUT I enjoyed it so much that I will most definitely read the hard copy of it soon and I can absolutely not wait until the sequel hits the shelves next year!!!

Goodreads synopsis:
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.

Anticipated November Book Releases

So, to be honest, I was never really too fussed about releases or reading the latest books as soon as they hit the shelves. I almost always just read whatever I felt like reading at the time, not paying too much attention to when the book came out. However, since starting this blog I felt the need to do some research and to find out which books piqued my interest so I can put them on my TBR and review them for you guys. Anyway, enough babbling, let’s have a look at my most anticipated book releases for next month!

Although there are way too many books on my TBR already I’ve found some soon to be released books that have caught my attention. I might not end up reading them at all but their synopses intrigued me and I’ll be keeping an eye out for them. Here are the November Book Releases that I’m most excited about. Also, I’d love to know what book(s) you can’t wait to finally see on the shelves!!! Book Review: Three Dark Crowns

71ARczy4URL

Book: Three Dark Crowns
Author: Kendare Blake
Genre: Fantasy
Format: Hard Copy
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5 stars)

I heard some people say that the book is a bit slow and I have to agree it starts off at a quite moderate pace but for me, that’s what I actually enjoyed so much about it. The process of getting to know the different characters and their personalities and interactions with each other was very interesting to me and in my opinion played a crucial part in the development of the story. I felt as if a lot of my questions were unresolved in the first book but I am hopeful that the second book will give me the answers (I ordered One Dark Throne straight after I finished this so I shall find out soon!).

Overall, I thought this was a really good book and I had a great time descending into the world of Fennbirn and cannot wait to see what happens in the sequel One Dark Throne!

Goodreads synopsis:
In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

Cozy Time Book Tag

Living on the other side of the world it’s only Spring where I come from but I still wanted to do the “Fall Time, Cozy Time Book Tag” so I decided to simply cross out the Fall bit. The weather in Australia is still pretty cold and rainy at times so I’m sure I’ll still be able to answer these questions properly and I didn’t want to have to wait until April/May to do this.

I was tagged by bookscoffeeandrepeat so thank you so much for that and now let’s get onto the questions.

CRUNCHING LEAVES: THE WORLD IS FULL OF COLOR – CHOOSE A BOOK THAT HAS REDS/ORANGES/YELLOWS ON THE COVER
this_savage_song_cover
This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
I just ordered this book the other day and can’t wait to get it in the mail and start reading it. It sounds like it’d be right up my alley so I’m excited to see if it will live up to my expectations.

COZY SWEATER: IT’S FINALLY COLD ENOUGH TO WEAR WARM COZY CLOTHING – WHAT BOOK GIVES YOU THE WARM FUZZIES?
alchemist
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
There’s just something about this book that is so heartwarming and beautiful. Would 100% go for this if I want to read a comforting and uplifting story!

FALL STORM: THE WIND IS HOWLING AND THE RAIN IS POUNDING – CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE BOOK OR GENRE THAT YOU LIKE TO READ ON A STORMY DAY.
My favorite genre to read, when the weather is a bit crazy and I’m stuck inside all day, would be any kind of (Dark) Fantasy or Thriller.

COOL CRISP AIR: WHAT’S THE COOLEST CHARACTER YOU’D WANT TO TRADE PLACES WITH?
71ARczy4URL
Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
Hmmn… This is a tough one. Having recently finished reading Three Dark Crowns I’d probably choose Arsinoe. I just think she’s a really cool character and I loved how she developed throughout the book and always followed her intuition.

HOT APPLE CIDER: WHAT UNDER HYPED BOOK DO YOU WANT TO SEE BECOME THE NEXT BIGGEST, HOTTEST THING?

91mNfGLsTwL
Perfume by Patrick Süskind
I would definitely choose the Perfume. I know it’s a fairly old book but I still feel like it never really got the publicity it deserved. I read it for the first time in high school and was absolutely fascinated by the story ever since. I’m still shocked when people tell me they’ve never even heard of it.

COAT, SCARVES, AND MITTENS: THE WEATHER HAS TURNED COLD AND IT’S TIME TO COVER UP – WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING BOOK COVER YOU OWN THAT YOU LIKE TO KEEP HIDDEN IN PUBLIC?
I thought about this question for a while and I have to say I don’t really own a book that I would want to hide in public. I am not the biggest fan of reading on my Kindle when I’m on public transport etc. and try to avoid taking it out when I’m around people so that’s probably the best answer I can give you guys to this question.

PUMPKIN SPICE: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FALL TIME COMFORTS FOOD/FOODS?
shepherds-pie-15755-1
100% Shepherd’s Pie. This is my number one comfort food of all time. I do not only eat this in the fall season but pretty much anytime I’m a bit down or need a pick me up. This dish will instantly make me happy again!
